Geography

INTENT

At St Barnabas and St Helena’s Federation, we strive to give all children the opportunity to unlock their potential and to give them the skills and knowledge in order to flourish in the world in which they live. We want children to know their place in the world and link their own experiences with those of others across the world.

Opportunities will be given in Geography for children to work in unity to develop their knowledge of place: locally, nationally and internationally, as well as their human, physical and environmental understanding, allowing them to make a positive transformation in the world in which they live. We aim to achieve this through inspiring and practical activities within the classroom as well as moving beyond the classroom into the field in order to give the children first-hand experiences.  Children will have the opportunity to see for themselves contrasting environments to support their learning and understanding of the world both within and beyond North Lincolnshire.

IMPLEMENTATION

At St Barnabas and St Helena’s Federation, we follow the Cornerstones Curriculum, adapted to meet the specific needs and context of our school. Geography is taught termly through carefully planned units that build knowledge and skills progressively. Lessons are designed to be practical and engaging, encouraging children to explore geographical concepts through hands-on activities and enquiry-based learning. Wherever possible, we enrich learning with fieldwork and first-hand experiences, enabling pupils to deepen their understanding of contrasting environments and develop a strong sense of place both locally and beyond.
