History
INTENT
At the St Barnabas and St Helena’s federation, our History curriculum strives to give all pupils the opportunity to learn about significant people, places and events that have shaped the past. It unlocks their understanding of their place in the world and enables them to develop their knowledge of Britain’s past and that of the wider world. In History, we celebrate the ways significant individuals and civilisations from the past have flourished and failed, worked in unity or transformed the world for the better. By delving into the past, our children will develop a deeper understanding of themselves and human nature. We will seek opportunities to showcase equality and diversity to help our children learn that everyone can embrace new chances, unlock their potential and seek positive transformation in the world.
IMPLEMENTATION
At St Barnabas and St Helena’s Federation, History is taught every term through well-sequenced units that build historical knowledge and skills over time. Each unit is carefully planned to allow children to explore significant people, places, and events through enquiry-based learning. Lessons encourage pupils to ask and answer questions, analyse a range of sources, and make meaningful connections across periods and themes. Key vocabulary is explicitly taught and revisited to support understanding. Through discussion, research and written tasks, children develop the skills to construct their own historical narratives.
IMPACT
Pupils are developing secure knowledge of significant people, places and events. They are learning how individuals and communities have flourished, worked in unity and embraced opportunities to shape the world. Observations show that pupils are increasingly engaged in their History learning and can recall key knowledge and vocabulary with growing confidence. Teaching continues to support understanding through active discussion and adaptive strategies, helping pupils to strengthen their skills over time.
