Modern Foreign Languages
At the St Barnabas and St Helena’s Federation, we want to inspire our children to develop a love of languages and a breadth of Spanish skills in preparation for further language learning in KS3 and beyond. With incidental learning opportunities for our KS1 pupils providing the building blocks for formal language learning in KS2. We strive to use inclusive practice to deliver a broad language curriculum based upon the five core strands of learning a language - speaking, listening, reading, writing and using appropriate grammar. At the St Barnabas and St Helena’s Federation, we enhance our curriculum with resources from Language Angels to support teaching and learning in Spanish. This ensures children have access to authentic Spanish speakers. Attainment and progression in languages will be monitored by teachers termly ensuring all learners are making expected or better progress.
INTENT
At St Barnabas Federation we aim for children to not only speak an additional language but to also have a natural curiosity of the cultures of the world. We aim for children to develop a good vocabulary bank; being able to speak and write with confidence and clarity. We want children to be able to unlock their potential and have the ability to use their new found language in practical situations and make sense of it in a wider world context.
IMPLEMENTATION
We use Language Angels as our comprehensive scheme of work which ensures clear develop and progression of knowledge, understanding and skills. As children move up through key stage two, they will develop wisdom and confidence. The curriculum is inclusive and allows all children to flourish and learn together with confidence and allows opportunities for children to know more, understand more and remember more therefore fully unlocking potential when using an additional language.
