First Steps
Based at Kirmington St. Helena's C of E Primary School, First Steps Nursery is home to the
youngest members of the St. Barnabas and St. Helena's Federation.
Our Aim
Our aim at Kirmington St Helena's First Steps Nursery, is to ensure your child feels secure, included and valued. By working together we can create an atmosphere where security and confidence can flourish. The learning environment is rich and stimulating and allows children to make decisions for themselves, thus enabling them to learn, develop and make good progress.
Learning
When your child enters the Nursery, they will be encountering a range of different experiences. Well-planned play is a key way in which your child will learn new skills. Through challenging activities and enjoyment, they will develop confidence and deepen their understanding of the world around them.
The Foundation Stage
The Foundation Stage begins when children are three years old and continues until the end of the school year in which they become five.
Your child will have already learnt a great deal by the time they are three years old and it is part of the partnership with parents and staff at Kirmington St. Helena's First Steps Nursery, to value and build on your child’s previous learning. Working together we can ensure your child gets the best start in life that they deserve.
The Session
Every session is 3 hours long and your child will undertake the following:
- Teacher directed activity at the correct ability level for your child;
- Story session;
- Structured play;
- Child initiated play;
- Outdoor activities;
- Circle time for discussion; and
- Snack time.

Opening and Session Times
Session Prices
Children are entitled to 15 hours free nursery, the term after their 3rd birthday. However, if you want your child to start nursery immediately they have turned three, (and before their free entitlement starts), so long as there is a place available, you will be able to do that, at a cost of £15 per session, with an additional £2 for lunch cover, should you wish your child to stay for the two full days.
PLEASE READ the First Steps Nursery Admissions Policy for full details of the terms and conditions, incluidng late payment fees and cancellation or absence procedures. The policy is available to read and download below, or by clicking the link above. and under the 'Policies' heading on the website. Alternatively, please call into the school office, if you require a paper copy.
You will also be required to complete and return a contract BEFORE your child's name is added to the waiting list. Completion of a contract is NOT confirmation of a place at the nursery.
Dinners
Your child will be able to have a hot school dinner on the days when they are attending for both a morning and an afternoon session, but there will be a small charge for this (currently £2.80 per meal rising to £2.90 from September 2025) which we ask that you pay for in advance using ParentPay, for which you will receive a login.
Should you decide to send your child in with a packed lunch, please be aware that, due to severe allergies, we are a nut free school AND we do not allow sweets or chocolate bars in packed lunches. Chocolate biscuits and cakes are permissible, but we would recommend that these make up a small portion of your child's lunch.
