Science

INTENT

At St Barnabas and St Helena’s Federation, our science curriculum is designed to unlock the potential of every child, enabling them to explore and understand the world around them through curiosity, investigation, and discovery. Rooted in our commitment to working in unity, we ensure that all children have equal access to high-quality, engaging science education.

We believe that a broad and balanced science education is a right, not a privilege. Our curriculum encourages children to flourish academically and personally by developing the skills of observation, prediction, planning, and investigation, through creative and hands on experiences. These skills are built upon year after year, fostering confidence and independence.

Scientific enquiry is at the heart of every unit. Children are encouraged to ask thoughtful questions, explore ideas, and apply a range of enquiry methods, as they seek positive change in the world, through their growing understanding of scientific concepts. In doing so, they learn to think critically, make informed decisions, and become responsible citizens.

Through hands-on learning, collaborative exploration, and inclusive practice, we aim to nurture children who are not only knowledgeable but also passionate about science and its role in shaping a better future.

IMPLEMENTATION

At St Barnabas and St Helena’s Federation, science is taught through a carefully sequenced curriculum that builds progressively on prior knowledge, vocabulary, and enquiry skills. Each unit includes practical, hands-on investigations that encourage children to ask questions, make predictions, and draw conclusions. Scientific enquiry is at the heart of our approach, supported by clear knowledge organisers and regular assessment to address misconceptions and strengthen understanding over time.

We ensure all pupils can access and enjoy science through inclusive teaching strategies, outdoor learning, and real-world experiences such as workshops and enrichment days. Vocabulary is explicitly taught and revisited to develop scientific literacy, and the profile of science is raised across the federation through engaging events like Science Week, helping children see the value of science in their everyday lives and future aspirations.
